Spring Ridge Review Newsletter
April 2007

Board of Director’s Corner
Meeting: April 17th - 7pm at VC

The Board of Directors, with inspiration from the Recreation Committee, have decided to have electricity installed at the 2 pavilions at Spring Forest Road. The new electrical power supply will be for planned community events only, such as "screen on the green" or "summer concert" series, etc..

High Sierra, the new Spring Ridge pool management company will begin their spring prep program at the pool facility. Pool opening is Saturday, May 26, 2007.

The Board is strongly considering hiring off-duty Sheriff's to patrol the property several times per week. The known hot spots will be some of their focal points.

The Board is considering a few variations on extending the pool season, similar to last year,  but with a few slight changes. More details to follow.

The 2006 Reserve Study indicates that several major expenditures will take place this year. Capital Reserve Expenditures will range from some town house asphalt repairs, concrete sidewalk work, curb and gutter work as well as electrical switchgear work in the pump house and Visitor Center.

The Recreation and Pool Committees are always looking for volunteers. Your help on special events or specific community activities will be greatly appreciated. Contact Nadena or Richard at 301-620-0782 if interested.

Spring Clean up

Finally spring is in the air! This is a great time of the year for many reasons, one being that all of the snow and ice has melted. In walking several sections of the property the other day, I couldn’t help but notice all of the old newspapers that are sitting on the sidewalks, front lawns and parking lots. Yes it’s true that these newspapers will ultimately dissolve there way back into the earth, but this may take several months. A better approach to these menacingly, strewn newspaper’s is to remove them and throw them into the trash, or better yet, recycle them. Additionally, I noticed that there are many abandoned tools sitting at the playgrounds within the community. I propose that  we all make a concerted effort to do a spring clean up. Thanks.

Unsupervised Children

Parents and Guardians - Please keep an eye on your children. With the warmer weather, we are seeing many unsupervised children and have had several reports of both personal property damage and common property damage.

Welcome New Spring Ridge Owners

This is a friendly welcome to all new residents of Spring Ridge Conservancy, Inc. and a friendly reminder that in general,  any alteration, change, or improvement to your exterior home and/or lot needs to be applied for and reviewed by the ACC. It seems quite obvious to some, but many owners forget that part of the HOA experience is seeking approval prior to making any changes on your property. This is a good thing and prevents that pink trampoline in the front yard or the jungle gym in the front yard made out of old beer bottles and tractor tires. Call the management office before making any changes. We can guide through the ACC process. It’s quick and painless.

FAN Club News

Donna Darr, Master Gardener from the Maryland Extension Service, who graced the front page of the Horizon Section of the Frederick News-Post on March 18th was a winning speaker at the March 21st FAN Social.  The Visitor Center was beautified by Ms. Darr and her samples of outstanding horticulture.  One very exotic plant she showed us was called “monkeys cup” because the flowers formed cups that wild monkeys drank water from in the jungle.  She lived up to her promise that “everyone in the audience will learn something this evening.”  Some of us were elated to know that house plants remove many vile pollutants from our rooms.  She gave pointers on how to easily care for house and garden plants, i.e. we can mulch by using recycled ground-up tires instead of bark.  This will save us from the chore of having to use mulch every year, and it is more resistant to insects.  To put a memorable end to the evening, lovely plants were raffled off to very lucky winners in our audience.  Ms. Darr shared with us her ambition: to work at the Washington, D.C. National Arboretum.  She is sure to be a valuable asset there.

Our April 18th guest author/speaker Linda Alexander has been having her well deserved share of publicity lately.  As mentioned in previous newsletters, she was a guest on the nationally televised Oprah Winfrey Show.  She was instrumental in the recent scheduling of the fascinating discussion that took place at the Frederick Coffee Company on March 18th which made front-page news on March 19th in the Frederick News-Post with the headline: “Rambling Writers Land in Frederick.”  A dynamic married couple, Dan Bessie and Jeanne Johnson, spoke about this Hollywood writing career and her realized dream of inspirational writing.  Linda’s link to them besides being friends is her recently published book, Friendly Witness:  Robert Taylor, Hollywood, and Communism.  Dan’s father, Alvah Bessie, an Academy Award nominee, was one of the Hollywood Ten, a group of screen-writers and other creative people who in the 1940’s were on a political blacklist.  He was jailed and fined for refusing to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee headed by Senator McCarthy.  Linda’s book delves deeply into this subject.  It will be interesting to find out what motivated Linda to embark upon this historical subject.

Linda will have her books on hand for sale and autograph session.  Her popular romantic novel, Weekends in New England will be the focus.  “Wrestling with issues of marriage and differences in faith, Alexander handles both with a sweet sensitivity…” was an excerpt from a review by the Romantic Times Book Club.  What was that magic that all started during “those weekends in New England?” I am very anxious to find out.

Simultaneous to Linda Alexander’s presentation will be the FAN Club’s Used Book Sale…Hard Cover: $2.00, Soft Cover: $1.00 and Children’s: $1.00 – Cash Only Please!  Proceeds will benefit Frederick’s Literacy Council.  See attached flyer for more details.  The exciting thing about this evening is that it is open not only to Spring Ridge residents, but the entire Frederick County community.  You definitely will not want to miss this!

May 16th is the date for the annual Year End Gala and Installation Banquet.  This year we will have food, drink, and décor with a “Touch of Italy” theme.  Please call Lynn Schumacher at 301-694-0829 or Ann Mamula at 301-620-8895 if you would like to attend.

Sharks News

Spring Ridge Kids Quiz:

  1. Will you be between the ages of 4 and 18 on June 1st?
  2. Can you doggy paddle the length of the pool?
  3. Do you take pride in representing your community?
  4. Are you interested in having a lot more fun this summer?

If you answered YES to these questions, you are needed!

The Spring Ridge Sharks are looking for swimmers that can help show the rest of Frederick County that Spring Ridge Rocks!  The Sharks compete against other community swim teams throughout the summer.  We are not just looking for fast swimmers.  We are looking for swimmers that love the pool, love our community, and love to have fun with friends and family.

Mark your calendar:  Team registration will begin on May 6th, with the season opening as soon as our pool is open.

Come try the team out!  You’ve got nothing to loose, and a whole lot to gain!

For a preview of what is in store this year, check out our Web site at:
http://www.springridgesharks.org/ or email us for more information at springridgesharks@comcast.net .  Get ready for pool water, sun, food, tie- dying, and an overnight!

Parents will not be left out!  As a matter of fact, if parents want to learn something about swimming and want “the best seat in the house” during meets, we are currently recruiting Swim Officials.  No experience is necessary.  We’ll provide all of the training that you’ll need, and even provide a Frederick Summer Swim League Official shirt!  Send an email to springridgesharks@comcast.net if you are interested!

Looking for something fun to do as a family outing?  Then why not enjoy an evening of baseball and fireworks with your friends and family on Saturday, June 2nd.  See the Frederick Keys Game flyer in this newsletter for details and reserve your seats early, as this usually a sold out event!

The following events are still in need of chairpeople:  The Summer Concert Series, the July 4th Bike Parade and Youth Soccer (fall).  Unfortunately, these popular events will not take place unless someone from the community volunteers to take over the events!  Please contact Heidi Hambrecht at 301-846-7918 or email hhambrecht@yahoo.com if you are interested.  This is a great way to become involved in the community!  A summary is available for each past activity, with all the information needed to run the event.  All we need is someone to take charge!

Our next Recreation Committee Meeting is Monday, April 9th at 7:30pm at the Visitor Center.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Moreau at 301-682-6499 or Kim Winkler at 301-698-1044.

Neighborhood Watch News

Recently, a few questions were raised from community members about billing discrepancies from New York J & P Pizza Restaurant.  These community members noticed that their bank statements reflected that a higher amount was charged to their Visa than they were actually billed in the restaurant.  In an effort to resolve these questions, the owners of the restaurant were asked about this issue and shared that they are aware of the problem and have posted notices on the doors and cash registers of the restaurant over the past several months.

The owners stated that Visa is temporarily overcharging customers, but adjusting the total to the correct amount within approximately two days.  They are working together with Visa to solve this problem and encourage any community members who have been overcharged to please bring the documentation to their attention and they will quickly resolve the problem.

They are not experiencing this issue with any other credit card vendors, only Visa.  Until the problem is resolved, it would be helpful for customers to use other payment options at the restaurant.  As soon as the problem is resolved, the owners will notify me and I will share the information with the community.  In the meantime, please read the signs on your way into J & P, use another credit card if possible, and enjoy J & P’s outstanding food.  So many of us are happy to have them in our neighborhood!
