Spring Ridge Review Newsletter
August 2003

Board of Directors Corner
Next Board Meeting - August 19, 2003 at 7pm

$Congratulations to the Sharks Swim team as they conclude the 2003 season with a record 211 team members. The board appreciates the efforts of the many volunteers who made this season a success.

$SCHOOL IS OPEN. Yes, by the time this newsletter reaches you, Frederick Schools will be opening in less than 25 days. Drivers are reminded to watch for the many walkers heading to Spring Ridge Elementary.

$Thanks to the Recreation Committee for sponsoring the Spring Ridge Swim Night; it was a rousing success.

Lost and Found

My son’s Raleigh M80 mountain bike was stolen. The bike is red, black and white in color with a chain-lock coiled around the seat post. If the bike is immediately returned, no questions will be asked. Anyone who sees this bike please contact Linda Turner at 301-668-8210 or return bike to 6302 Hawkins Court North. Thank you.

Asphalt Path Seal Coating Planned for the Week of August 4th

Weather permitting, some of the asphalt walking paths will be seal-coated during the week of August 4th. The entire process should only take 2-3 days. It is advised that once the sealant is applied to the surface of the path, that no one walk on the surface for 12 hours. It will be hard for the many walkers and joggers to know when the actual application of the sealant was done, so the best rule of thumb is that if the surface looks wet, don’t walk on it. The path that is being done this year is from Knollwood Drive up to the pool area and school area.

POOL HOURS:
OPEN DAILY
10:30am - 8:30pm

!!!PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!

In a few, short weeks, kids will be going back to school. Please remember to watch out for children crossing streets and waiting at the bus stops. Two new speed bumps were placed on Ridgefield Drive by the Elementary School as well as Spring Forest Road.

For Parents: Remind your children to practice safety when crossing streets and waiting for buses.

For Drivers: Please slow down around the bus stop and crosswalk areas and be courteous to bikers using the bike lanes, especially near the school.

FROM THE DESK OF A FRUSTRATED HOMEOWNER:

There has been a rash of Spring Ridge homeowners who are sheepishly dumping their bulk trash off at the various condo dumpster locations. This is exactly like someone in your neighborhood emptying out their garbage cans on your lawn and you getting stuck with the removal efforts and costs.
The condos within Spring Ridge have their own small budgets, and, needless to say, these homeowners should not have to pay for the removal of the trash and bulk trash not created by them.
It boggles the mind how parasitic-like and disrespectful this is. For those who have done this, please stop immediately. We all need to respect one another’s property, and dumping your trash in our dumpsters is not very respectful at all.

Lights Out???

If you happen to see a street light that is out or malfunctioning, please get the tag number off of the light pole (the pole number is about 8'-9' high on the side of the pole) and call it in, along with the location, into the Visitor Center. Or, if you would like, email the information to melissa.ej@pmpbiz.com. or richard.ag@pmpbiz.com.

Pool News

The Magical Summer Community Pool Party that was held on Saturday, July 12th was a tremendous success. Hot dogs! Tacos! Lemonade! Cookies! while the supply lasted were free; the supply lasted nearly until the end of the event.

Kwan-do, the magician due and their dove and bunny were of star quality. Everyone was very excited by their performance.

Dave Wharen, D.J. from Soundsations tied in just the right music for each event that went on. He was also extremely helpful in projecting our announcements and raffle winners.

The Pool Committee has six members: Bonnie High, Donna Keys, Karen Logue, Rosalyn Mansouri, Kathy Sheehy, and Jonette Stupke. Two members generally chair each party although each member works for them. This party was chaired by Karen Logue and Roz Mansouri.

The following lists people and businesses that deserve special thanks for helping make our day in the sun so much brighter: Blockbuster Video - donation of prizes
Weis Market - donation of prize M&T Bank - donation of prizes
Burger
Carol Roche and Co. - donation of prize for contest

Teen Party
The third annual teen party will be held on Friday, August 15th from 8pm-11pm. (Rain date - August 16th) Parents can rest assured that this will be a “secure site,” a place for teens to come and enjoy pizza, beverages, and a DJ. There is a $5.00 admission charge, and those attending have to sign in and sign out. They also have to submit their admission forms (use form provided on page 4). Teens have to be picked up by a responsible party in order to leave the premises. Contact the Visitor Center if there are any questions. We are still in need of volunteers! If last year’s teen party is an indication, it will be an awesome night! The party is for children between the ages of 11 and 17.

End of Summer Party
The End of Summer Party will be on Saturday, August 23rd. (Rain date - August 24th) Check the bulletin board and marquis as a reminder. Volunteers are much needed and appreciated!

Adult Night
The next Adult Night will be on Monday, August 18th from 6:30-8:30pm. Only those 16 and older will be admitted to the pool during these times.

Float Nights
August 4th and 25th will be designated as Float Nights between the hours of 6:30-8:30pm. Bring your favorite floats and be prepared to have a relaxing, fun-filled time with your family and friends.

Blood Drive

The Mobile American Red Cross blood drive will be held Monday, September 8, 2003 from 1-5pm in the Visitor Center parking lot. Please contact the Visitor Center at 301-620-0782 to schedule your appointment if you are interested in donating. Thank you.

Landscaping Treatments

Valley Crest will have four more applications this Summer and Fall. There will be one in September, one in November, and one in December 2003. Most of the treatments will be fertilization rather than herbicidal treatments. There will also be one broadleaf weed control application in October. Treated areas will be posted with signs throughout the property. These areas should not be walked upon by the homeowners or pets until the treatment has dried.

Others Don’t Want a Mess in Their Yards

There are many dog owners in Spring Ridge and each and every owner is expected to be courteous to all neighboring homeowners. Please do not let your dogs roam free and use the yards of others for a bathroom. This is not only disrespectful, but it destroys the yards that many have worked so hard to keep beautiful.

Babysitting Co-op

If you are interested in starting a neighborhood babysitting co-op and playgroup, please call Tracie McGraw at 301-631-5744.

Tennis Anyone???

Desperately seeking tennis players!! Looking for both beginner players and intermediate (USTA 3.5-4.5 or better). Please call Jim and Donna at 301-696-0087 V/TTY.

SHARK NEWS
Another quick season is over for the Spring Ridge Sharks who took 3rd place in Divisionals. It could not have been done without our two terrific coaches, Joni and Sherry, and the invaluable hours of volunteering from the parents. So many of you stepped up to bat and did more than your share of the volunteer work. Thank you for all the time you dedicated to help things run smoothly. A big ‘thank you’ also to all of our new swimmers who joined us this season...we hope you had a great time and join us again next year.

Our team has grown to almost 200 swimmers; however, a larger team does not always mean a dedicated team. We LOST two of
the meets that (after scores were tallied) we had actually WON! Far too many parents failed to notify the team that their child would not be swimming in a meet, resulting in many lost points, and consequently two lost meets. Having such a large team requires participation in and attendance at all swim team events unless previous notice is given. Many changes will occur next season to ensure that the necessary parental involvement is strong and vital.

Anyone who did not receive his/her trophy at Divisionals last Saturday evening may pick it up at the Visitor Center Monday-Friday, 11am-5pm. Ditto for team pictures.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with each and every child on the team. Until next season, beware of swimming in shark infested waters!!
