NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH NEWS

Many people take summer vacations abroad. The Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.)based in Washington, D.C. is a non-profit communications organization sponsored by the property and casualty insurance industry. The I.I.I. urges people to take steps to insure the safety of their property while they are away from home.

Our society has changed so much, that protecting your home requires more than just locking your doors and windows to protect again a physical break-in. Now, you should be protecting your home against a virtual break-in as well.

Identity theft is now one of the fastest growing white collar crimes in the United States. It is extremely important to protect your credit card and Social Security information. According to the FBI, the months of July and August are months that typically show the largest number of home robberies.

When you are going to be away from your home, the I.I.I. suggests you take the following steps to protect your property:

$ Keep your home lit, indoors and out. Use timers, and keep exterior lights out of reach of burglars who may try to turn them off.
$ Dead bolt windows and doors. Make it difficult for someone to break into your home.
$ Invest in a burglar alarm. The potential noise can scare off a burglar.
$ Make sure doors are sturdy, well made, and fit the frames securely.
$ Disconnect your computer from the Internet connection while you are away from home. Make gaining access difficult.
$ Keep any valuables, including important documents, hidden away in a safe place with a lock and key. And Do Not keep valuables in an obvious place.
$ Have mail, newspapers, and any packages picked up by a friend or neighbor, so that it doesn’t look like someone isn’t home.
$ Have someone you trust maintain your lawn.
$ Leave the curtains the same way you do when you are at home. Don’t advertise that you aren’t home by making any obvious changes.

According to the I.I.I., there is Insurance available on the market for identity theft, that provides reimbursement to victims for the cost of restoring their identity and repairing credit reports.

August Pool Committee News

# Events calendar attached. Please read!

# Adult Nights - Those attending the July 9th Adult Night at the Pools enjoyed the evening immensely. There’s nothing quite like swimming under the stars to relieve the every-day stresses. Why not come to our next Adult Night which will be on August 20th from 8pm to 10pm. Bring your out-of-town guests with you for a summer evening outdoors either in or near the diamond-like sparkling clear waters of the Spring Ridge Pools. A person must be 16 years old or older to participate in Adult Night.

# Community Pool Party - As mentioned in previous newsletters, the big day is July 31st at noon. There will be music provided by the Soundsations along with great pig and beef eats (frankfurters for the kids), and soft drinks. It’s suggested you bring your own accompanying dish, i.e. salad, vegetables. We have splendid door-prizes thanks to the following local business sponsors:

New York J&P Pizza
Spring Ridge Exxon
Spring Ridge Salon
Paul’s Coffee Gourmet
Weis
Spring Ridge Photo
M&T Bank
Spring Ridge Chiropractic Center
East Side Auto Service
Blockbusters
Spring Ridge Physical Therapy & Wellness Center
Frederick Real Estate Group
McDonald’s
JR’s Pizza

# Lifeguards - The guards we have are true role models for all of the younger kids who attend the pool. They indeed are hard-working, obviously extremely physically fit, well-mannered, and have wonderful senses of humor. We, on the Pool Committee appreciate their efforts and dedication. We have gotten to know them and can see first hand what their jobs entail. We want to ask all who attend the pool to realize this and to in some way show appreciation for their work in making our pools so stellar.

How can you do this? Just a sampling of suggestions - Thank them verbally the next time you come face to face, have your children make a great greeting card for them, bake them some cookies, or think of something yourselves. Also keep in mind that the guards are there for your safety and shouldn’t have to pick up your trash. Be respectful!

# Teen Night - This year it’s on August 13th from 8pm - 11pm for teenagers in grades 6-12 (Note: Teens must be entering grade 6 to participate). The admission cost is $5.00 per teenager and will include pizza, soda, and the DJ. Please fill out the permission slip on the last page of this newsletter and bring it with $5.00 per teenager to the party. The permission slip must be submitted in order to attend the party and must include a parent/guardian signature. Volunteers are needed. If interested please call the Visitor Center at 301-620-0782 or contact the Pool Committee.

# Float Night - August 27th - Bring your favorite float. All ages are welcome!

It was overheard that someone wanted to go to the pools but didn’t feel comfortable attending alone. Many people come to the pools alone; it is a friendly environment. It’s not always easy to coordinate a time when your friend or spouse want to go with you. Just give it a try - Come and meet some new friends!

# Sharkey, our Pool Etiquette and Tips Mascot, again reminds you to remember the following rules for good citizenship:

1. Please, no glass containers allowed.
2. Please clean off your table when you are finished.
3. Use trash cans available at the pool for spilled items.
4. Please be considerate of the lifeguards.
5. Do Not block the pool steps.
6. During peak hours, avoid putting your towels and possessions on empty lounge chairs.

Tip - All ages should rest for twenty (20) minutes after eating to prevent any stomach cramping and vomiting.

To voice any concerns about any aspect of the pool’s functioning, please come to our next Pool Committee Meeting on August 10th at 7pm in the Visitor Center.

Spring Ridge Sharks

The Spring Ridge Sharks took a bite out of the competition! Our 181 swimmers worked hard at practice, improved their times, and enjoyed making new friends! The swimmers found that working together developed pride, loyalty, and self respect. Our three coaches, Brooke Ahalt - Head Coach, and Audrey Wells and Nicole Botner - our Assistant Coaches, did a great job in showing the swimmers how to achieve better times and encouraged their progress. All this hard work was evident at the meets. Within our division (FSSL Division II), the Sharks went undefeated in the regular season.

The swimmers and parents would like to thank the community for sharing pool time in order for them to practice. We also want to thank the Pool Committee for helping us have a successful season by working together with our schedules and making sure we had what we needed and time to practice. The PMP staff supported us with the running of our meets, opening up the Visitor Center for our registration and during home meets to run the computers.

The Spring Ridge Shark team is one (1) of thirteen (13) teams that is a part of the Frederick Summer Swim League (FSSL). There are about 1500 swimmers each season that compete against one another in Frederick County. We would like to thank our parents/volunteers for their support and tireless efforts in making sure that everything ran smoothly. We have one of the best parent support teams in the League.

Thank you ALL for a great season!

Johannes Gross and Gary Roeder
