Public Hearing Notice A public hearing is scheduled for August 11, 2005 before the Board of County Commissioners to accept public input on the New Market Region Plan including two proposed rezonings adjacent to the Spring Ridge PUD. Under consideration is the rezoning of the Bare/Nusbaum property, a parcel of land just north of I-70 between the terminus of Newport Dr. West and Newport Dr. East . Townhouse development is proposed for this property. Also under consideration is the rezoning of the Beshers property located off the terminus of Dresden Place and behind some homes on a portion of Spring Forest Road and Saddlebrook Lane . Single family homes are proposed to be constructed on this property. A request to connect Quinn Road to Eaglehead Drive was not recommended by the planning commission but could be reconsidered by the commissioners. This road connection could create traffic impacts for property owners near Quinn Road . In addition, 13,000 to 15,000 new residential housing units are proposed for the region which will have impacts to local schools and traffic. Public comment is welcome on these properties and all other proposed changes to the region plan. Additional information on the New Market Region Plan can be obtained by contacting Tim Goodfellow in the Frederick County Planning Department at 301-694-2508 or at tgoodfellow@fredco-md. Minutes Secretary Needed! Would you like to earn extra income each month? If so, Spring Ridge Conservancy is seeking a Minutes Secretary. Responsibilities include attending the Board Meetings, taking notes and producing Minutes. Experience preferred but not necessary. This is a paid service. Interested persons should contact Richard Gemmell at the Visitor Center at 301-620-0782 or richard.ag@pmpbiz.com . How does your garden and lawn grow.... Does your lawn look green and lush? Is it stressed, dry with bare spots and overrun with weeds? Here are 6 tips for transforming your lawn into a green lush oasis. Tip 1 Mow your lawn properly. Mow high using a sharp blade. A dull blade will tear rather than cut your grass leaving your lawn vulnerable to disease. Your blade should be sharpened or replaced every year or two. Tall grass shades the soil thus reducing evaporation. Set the mower for 3 to 3 ½ inches and keep that height all year. Mow the lawn when it reaches 4 inches tall and cut it back to 3 inches. Tip 2 Use only slow release granular fertilizer. Slow release nitrogen fertilizer needs to be applied only once or twice a year. Slow release nitrogen fertilizer does not hurt the good soil critters, quick release fertilizers do. Use in the spring and again the fall. If your lawn is in really good shape, you can get by with one application in the fall. Tip 3 Aerate & over-seed the lawn every 3 to 4 years. Over-seed even if your lawn looks great. A lawn that is as dense as a brand new sod, year after year, will have few weeds. The fall is the best time for over-seeding. Tip 4 Avoid watering too much or too little. If you walk over the grass and your footprint remains, it's time to water. In spring and fall, give the lawn an inch of water each week. In summer, lawns need 2 inches a week. Tip 5 Buy only the highest quality grass seed. Buy full sun mix if your lawn gets over 6 hours of sun a day. Use a shade mixture if your lawn gets 3 to 6 hours of sun a day. Any lawn getting less than 3 hours of sun a day must be over-seeded every spring to look average for the season. Tip 6 Weed control & pests. To curb the crabgrass and weeds growing at your curbside and driveway, spray with a weed killer like roundup. Follow the directions on the container label. Japanese Beetles & Bag Worm—Spray with a general purpose insecticide that mentions Japanese Beetles and Bag Worm on the label. Follow the directions on the product. SPRING RIDGE FANS ARE COOL If the past is an indication of things to come for Spring Ridge's very popular FAN (Friends and Neighbors) Club, then ‘05 - ‘06 will be an extremely memorable period. The main focus of this group which holds monthly socials at the Visitor's Center on the 3rd Wednesdays at 7pm is to enjoy life to the fullest here in Spring Ridge. This entails being a social group AND much more. We aim to have interest groups that would appeal to every endeavor, be it literary, eating, movies, beer, wine, and just about anything that members old and new think they'd like to do. Also, they are community minded and participate in helping greater Frederick in charitable endeavors via the Community Outreach Committee. The beauty of FAN is the members. Age ranges are from twenty-somethings to seventy-somethings (with the welcome mat open to one hundred and somethings). The spirit of the people belonging is something to behold. Most are not native Fredericktonians; they hail from North, South, East, West and other countries too. The monthly announcements of the programs will appear on the sign board near the road in front of the Visitor's Center. Just show up for any of these that appeal to you. This is your invitation! BACK TO SCHOOL BACKPACK TIME!!! As mentioned, FAN Club is involved in helping our community. This is done through the Community Outreach Committee which is chaired by Joann Lindgren. For the past seven years an annual event has been to collect school supplies for the less fortunate children at Spring Ridge and Oakdale Elementary Schools. This year we are extending to the entire Spring Ridge Community the chance to participate in this charitable endeavor. We are hoping that when you go shopping you can purchase the following items (as much as you possibly can) to donate: Backpacks Please call Joann Lindgren at 301-696-8609 for more details; you may drop off any donations along with a note with your name on it at her front porch at 6312 Iverson Terrace North. There will be a specially marked bin which will be checked daily up until August 22, 2005 at which time the backpacks will be stuffed and then delivered to the schools. Thank you so much in advance for your help and understanding in supporting this effort which will provide a strong start for kids in our midst. It also reflects so positively on the caring residents of Spring Ridge. Pool Committee News A list of some reasons as to why Spring Ridge Pools are receiving soooo many compliments from residents and guests is as follows: Extended Pool Season We should be proud of our enviable pools, yet we also have to be aware of concerns that exist which prevent five-star ratings. How can we achieve such grades? By cleaning up our trash. By cleaning up ice cream spills and all other “accidents.” By refraining from using improper language at the pools. By giving more “respect” to our pool furniture—A large number of furniture pieces get broken through careless use. The Piano Pool appears to have a cloudy, murky consistency compared to our other pools. After investigation it was concluded that this is because the pool is lower than the pump house (other pools are at the same level). Another reason is that little children usually swim in the Piano Pool and they generally are wearing very generous amounts of sun screen. Mini Minutes of July 12 th Pool Committee Meeting Century staff discussed purchase of an additional backboard to be used for carrying the injured. It is needed so as to avoid closing the pool if only one is in use. Pools passed health inspections on June 23 rd . New furniture was received. The Pool Committee will make a monetary donation to the Sharks for the time Johannes Gross will spend DJ'ing at the Community Pool Party. Pool Pass Problem - The lifeguards are having a problem with people who don't pick up their pool passes at the end of their sessions at the pools. Residents are required to do so because this will allow guards to account for all who are at the pool. Please comply and pick up your pool passes when finished at the pools. Community Pool Party - July 30 th proved to be another date that residents at Spring Ridge will remember as a joyous occasion. Adults and children were involved in a fun-filled afternoon of games, music listening, delicious food provided by Dempsey Catering, and magnificent raffle prizes. Much thanks are due to our local merchants for their generous donation of prizes. This year we had a Grand Prize Donor: Mr. Russell Thornley, of Earthfirst, Inc. donated a $100.00 gift certificate for merchandise at Stadler Nurseries.
