Spring Ridge Review Newsletter
February 2007

Board of Director’s Corner
Meeting: February 20th - 7pm at VC

The Spring Ridge Community is looking for volunteers to serve on the Architectural Change Committee, Recreation Committee, Pool Committee and the Sharks Swim Team.  If you would be interested in participating on one of these committees, please contact the Visitor Center at 301-620-0782 or richard.ag@pmpbiz.com.  They will gladly provide you with details about these committees and when they meet.

The Board is reviewing proposals from five pool management companies to operate our pools this summer.  Following the interviews, the Board will make a selection and announce it in the newsletter.  Thanks to those residents who filled out the pool evaluation.

The Board has approved an easement for the Besher property, one condition of this approval was to maintain at thirty (30) ft. tree buffer between the new and existing properties.

Even though we haven’t had much snow YET, a reminder that single family sidewalks must be cleared by the homeowners and townhouse lead sidewalks to the front door must be cleared by the homeowners.

The Board has approved a change to the Architectural Guidelines that will permit single family and village homeowners to use vinyl railing on decks.  Please remember that all changes must be applied for through the ACC.

2007 Community Directory

The 2007 Community Directory will be complete soon.  Residents should receive a copy at the front door to their homes over the next few weeks.  Thank you.

Bike Lane Concerns

The Board of Directors are concerned about a dangerous situation occurring everyday in Spring Ridge regarding the Bike Lanes.  The Bike Lanes are exactly that, a “Bike Lane.”  It is not a sidewalk or shoulder area of the road, it is considered part of the roadway.  It appears that some have turned this area into a pedestrian lane, while others use it for running.  Also, parents with strollers have been seen walking in the Bike Lanes.  Pedestrians should not, and by law cannot be walking/running in the Bike Lane.  Maryland law states that if a sidewalk is provided, pedestrians must use it and they cannot be in the roadway.  Sidewalks are provided along Spring Ridge Parkway and Ridgefield Drive, meaning that all pedestrian traffic should be on the sidewalks.

Pedestrians and cars traveling 30+ mph are not supposed to be right next to each other because it is dangerous, thus the sidewalk law.  What makes this situation even worse is that the people walking in the Bike Lanes are walking with the flow of traffic, meaning that they cannot see the traffic approaching them from behind.  It is only a matter of time until a driver is not paying attention, talking on the cell phone, changing the CD or DVD player and they are going to strike one of these pedestrians in the Bike Lane.  When the collision is investigated, the pedestrian will be found “at fault” in the collision because they are not supposed to be in the Bike Lane, they are supposed to be on the sidewalk.  Remember, pedestrians do not have the right of way, unless they are in a marked crosswalk.  At all other locations, vehicles have the right of way.

Please educate yourselves, your teens, and young children on this issue before we have a tragedy in our community.

Snack Bar Vendor Wanted

The Spring Ridge Community is seeking a vendor to provide seasonal Pool Concessions beginning in the 2007 summer season.  Any vendors who applied in 2006, who are interested in applying for 2007, must still provide a new bid.  The vendor will provide the food vendor cart, with the full outfitting, and must meet all health department codes and inspections.  Knowledge of food service a must - food service license and certifications required.  Vendor to staff, run, and be responsible for daily operations.  Rent, contracts, insurance, and waivers required.  Please submit a sealed bid indicating qualifications, suggested menu, hours to be open, and equipment layout and licensing status by February 28, 2007.  Contact the Spring Ridge Visitor Center at 301-620-0782 for area additional information.

Volunteering, It’s the Life of the Community

Webster’s Dictionary defines the word “volunteer” as a person(s) who enters or offers to enter into any service of his own free will. Spring Ridge would not be the same community without the many volunteers who offer their time and service. A deep appreciation is extended to the current and past volunteers  who have done so much to make Spring Ridge feel like home.

At this time, the community is in need of more volunteers to help serve on the following committees: the Architectural Change Committee, Pool Committee, Recreation Committee and the Sharks Swim Team.  If you would like to serve in any capacity, please contact Richard Gemmell at 301-620-0782 or richard.ag@pmpbiz.com. Your efforts will not go unnoticed and your service will be most appreciated.

Frederick Girls Softball Registration

Frederick Girl Softball, formerly FBA Girls Softball, invites girls ages 6 - 14 to register for girls Fast Pitch Softball.  Frederick Girl Softball participates in the Frederick County Girls Softball League.  Registrations are being accepted through the month of February.  Contact Roger Krull at 301-694-6247 or email krull@adelphia.net for more information.

“Trash Talk”

This is a reminder to all residents to secure all loose trash and recycle items when placing trash containers and recycle containers at the curbside on pick-up days.  Even the slightest breeze can blow loose trash and recycle items out of their containers.  These items have to go somewhere and often times that somewhere is your neighbor’s yard, common areas, or drainage ponds.  The build-up of trash and recycle items in these areas is unsightly and detracts from the overall visual beauty of the neighborhood.

Residents are also reminded that trash is to be placed in proper trash containers and recycle items in proper bins, only.  Containers and bins must not be placed at the curbside before 6pm the evening before the scheduled pick-up day.  Also, did you know that you can buy lids for your recycle bins?  Well, you can.  Lids and extra recycle bins are available for purchase through the Frederick County Office of Recycling.  Lids are $4.00 and bins are $6.55.  For information on how to purchase lids or extra bins, please call 301-696-2960 or visit the website at http://www.co.frederick.md.us/Recycling, scroll down and click on Curbside Recycling in the left-hand column.

So, please take the necessary steps to secure all containers and bins when placing them at the curb.  Also, if you see trash lying around your property or common areas, please take the time to pick it up.  With a little effort, we can keep our community a clean and beautiful place to live!

Welcome All New Residents

In the recent past, Spring Ridge has seen nearly 200 new homeowners per year. The current slow down in the market has most likely affected that number. But to all of the new residents, welcome to Spring Ridge and Frederick County, Maryland.

For those new owners who don’t already know this, the management office for the association is in the stone building near the 4 way stop sign near the swimming pool facility. Please feel welcome to come in at any time to discuss a problem or ask a question.

Our hours in the Visitor Center are: Monday through Friday, 11am-5pm.  You may also call us at 301-620-0782 or email at richard.ag@pmpbiz.com.

Snow Removal Information

Single Family Homes: All streets are maintained and plowed by Frederick County, including Spring Ridge Parkway, and Ridgefield Drive.  All sidewalks in the single family neighborhoods are to be shoveled by the homeowner.  Town Homes and Condos: Here are some of the snow removal guidelines for the 2006-2007 season.  In a snow/sleet storm, if accumulation is under 2", the contractor is to apply chemicals to the common sidewalks and roads.  If total snow/sleet accumulation is 2-4", the contractor is to begin plowing only after 2" has actually accumulated on the roadways.  Chemical application will begin with the parking areas and private roads, followed by common sidewalks.  In a big snowstorm, the contractor will plow to open up the private roads.  However, most of the detailed snow removal work will not take place until after the snow has finished falling.  The asphalt walking path will be shoveled from Knollwood Drive to the school.  However at the corner of Ridgefield Drive, only one side of the street will be shoveled to the school.  The side that seems better to shovel is the Visitor Center side since the school itself doesn’t shovel their own path on Ridgefield Drive.  There are safe cross-overs in front of the school. (Management will remain flexible on these issues as the needs change in the community.)  Town Homes: One or two parking spots in the overflow lots should be used for snow piles.  CONTRACTORS ARE NOT TO CLEAR OUT INDIVIDUAL PARKING SPOTS FOR RESIDENTS WHO MOVE THEIR VEHICLES FOR SUCH SERVICE. If multiple spots are empty at the time the plows are there, the Contractor may clear them.  Please don’t shovel snow from around your vehicle and throw it back into the street.  The snow should be placed in your yard, out of the way, not in the street and not on the sidewalks.  If snow accumulation is over 4", the same treatment will be applied as described above, and careful attention will be kept to the location of snow piles.  Areas to be specifically avoided are mailboxes, fire hydrants, and bus stops.  Once accumulation reaches 4" or more, walking paths are to be cleared (one snow blower path) near the end of the storm.  As always, residents should use caution at all times.  The contractor can’t be everywhere for every weather event.  Please remember to NEVER use rock salt on any sidewalk or concrete surface.  Rock salt severely damages concrete. Please do not use it.

FAN Club News

The Third Annual FAN B-I-N-G-O night on January 17th was, as promised, a time to laugh, shout, meet new neighbors, nosh on delicious snacks, and win prizes.  The FAN Club Board Members generously donated prizes for the evening such as luxurious Avon products, a cozy winter blanket, hand stitched products, to name a few.  A noteworthy occurrence was that a person who had never been to the Visitor Center for a FAN event before was a three time BINGO winner that evening.  Congratulations!

Disorganization and clutter in your home and/or office space can impede your effectiveness, cause stress, and at best show you as a less attractive person than you actually are.  Some people are compulsively neat and orderly.  Who is it that arranges the food in her pantry in alphabetical order?  There is someone who does that.  That’s not the goal!  If you, however can benefit from the “Clutter Consultants,” Mimi Mack and Carol Heine, experts in closets, shelves, and more, come and be rescued on Wednesday, February 21st at 7pm at the Visitor Center for our monthly social.  They will give practical advice on streamlining your physical space.  The welcome mat will be rolled out for those who have never been to a FAN affair.  Wonderful things can happen as is evidenced from the three-time winner (above paragraph).  Refreshments as usual, will be served.

Our April Booking:  In line with the clutter issue, here is a bit of a coming attraction for our April 18th social at 7pm at the Visitor Center:  Please see the flyer enclosed with this newsletter which is self-explanatory and deals with our Book Sale.  If any paper back and/or hard cover books are adding to the clutter in your life, NOW is the time to bring them to the Visitor Center where they will be part of our community service Book Sale.  Anna Walters, Chair of the Book Club is in charge of this, and proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Literary Council of Frederick County.  Please call her with any questions at 301-624-4350.

Also planned for that evening will be a nationally renowned author, Linda Alexander who will talk to us about her ventures.  Books written by her include:  Weekends in New England, Dorothy From Kansas Meets The Wizard of X, The Unpromised Land, and Until Next Time.  She also wrote for the Washington Times and she was a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.  More of biography will follow in the next newsletter, but you can search for her on Google and find many fascinating facts about our April speaker.  You’ll have the opportunity to buy her books and have her autograph them.

Our March social is yet to be announced.

Sharks News

The first Spring Ridge Sharks Meeting for 2007, held on January 18th, was very productive and detailed minutes have been posted on the Sharks’ website.

Highlights from the meeting:

Attendees voted in the 2007 Executive Committee.

Attendees had a chance to review and comment on our strategic vision, our coaching evaluation and selection process, and our Website policy, all of which were later approved by our Executive Committee.

We had asked for volunteers, and several families have come forward to participate!

Individual Committees are already planning their meetings, and they could all use additional volunteers.  Anyone wishing to share their skills should contact any of our Committee members.

Thanks for ALL of the participants – those that helped in planning, those that attended the meeting, those that volunteered, and those that emails of support!

We hope everyone is having a great winter!
