Board of Director’s Corner
Meeting: July 17th- 7pm at VC

The Board thanks all the residents who came to the Conservancy Board Meeting on June 19th.  The Board and Management Staff of both PMP and High Sierra will be working to solve the pool problems mentioned at the meeting and sent in by the community.  While we expect the new pool management company needs time, we are serious about solving all issues.  We hope you see the differences already, with the posting of the rules and the pool chemistry.  Also, we have changed the procedure to gain admittance to the pool on a trial basis, reducing wait times at the gate.  We will try this and meet again in July to assess how this test is working.

The Board acknowledges the efforts of the Sharks Swim Team, with over 180 children signed up and participating.  This activity is truly a community effort.

The Recreation Committee has a number of exciting events planned throughout the summer.  Please see their announcement in this newsletter.

One activity that will not be held is the Bike Parade on July 4th.  This activity was canceled as no one stepped forward with enough advance notice to chair this event.  We hope to schedule this event again next year, with community volunteers to run it.

The Spring Ridge Firehouse is nearing completion.  Look for the announcement of the Grand Opening shortly.

Finally, the Board regrets to inform you that the Pool Committee was disbanded under terms of the Pool Committee Charter, as their membership had fallen below the required four members.  The Board will attempt to reconstitute the Pool Committee in order to plan pool activities for the 2008 summer season, by asking more people in the community to volunteer this fall.

Happy Independence Day!

The Visitor Center and PMP, Inc. will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day.  The Spring Ridge Conservancy, Inc. Board of Director’s and PMP Management wish everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Pool Committee Update

It is with much regret that the Board of Directors announce that  the long-standing  Pool Committee is dissolved.  The Charter for the committee states that at least 4 members shall make up the committee.  Unfortunately, the committee lost several of its members this year and the last year.

The Board of Director’s, along with the entire  community, want to thank all of the committee members,  both present and past for their hard work and volunteer spirit.

Many of the pool committee events that are normally scheduled for the season will simply not take place this year. The Board will send out a “Call” for volunteers next January for the 2008 pool season.

New Pool Rules and Operational Improvements

In an effort to improve the safety of the pool as well as the administrative operation, the following changes have been instituted:

Sharks and Minnows will no longer be allowed to be played in any of the pools.

An additional 4 Square area for the older kids has been placed near the soda machines.

The Board is looking at allowing Café Lorraine to offer prepared foods for the members at the pool.

Jumping off of the diving board can only be done straight out away from the board. Never to the sides.

High Sierra Pool Management has been asked to institute a “zero tolerance” approach to horse play and problem behavior. They have also been asked to be professional, courteous and friendly while still enforcing the rules.

As an experiment, the Board has asked High Sierra to immediately return pool passes once members have stopped at the attendants table. This should eliminate the slow process of both entering and leaving the pool areas by the members and their guests.

Neighborhood Watch News

In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  Please bear this phrase in mind as the heat from the summer sun begins to warm us during the Dog Days of Summer.  The following information was extracted from http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/heattips.asp to remind us that preventing heat related illness is paramount for a cool, incident-free summer.  As we travel within the community and surrounding areas, engaging in activities, remind others of the tips mentioned here to assist in the possible prevention of a heat related illness.

Tips for Preventing Heat-Related Illness:

  • Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink while the weather is hot.
  • Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar–these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.
  • Stay indoors and, if at all possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library–even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. Call your local health department to see if there are any heat-relief shelters in your area.
  • Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath, or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • NEVER leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.
  • Although any one at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others.
  • Check regularly on:
    • Infants and young children
    • People who have a mental illness
    • Those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure
  • Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Infants and young children, of course, need much more frequent watching.

If you must be out in the heat:

  • Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.
  • Cut down on exercise. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour.  A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Warning: If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage. Remember the warning in the first “tip” (above), too.
  • Try to rest often in shady areas.
  • Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat (also keeps you cooler) and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effective products say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on their labels).
