Spring Ridge Review Newsletter
June 2004

Board of Director’s Corner
Next Meeting: June 15, 2004 at 7pm - Visitor Center

1. The Pool will open on Saturday, May 29th. Yes, it is that time of year already. The Visitor Center will be processing new applications for the permanent pool passes, guest passes were sent out with last month’s newsletter.

2. The Board has approved a major expenditure to replace the playground equipment that was vandalized last month. The new playground equipment should be installed prior to the end of school.

3. Thanks to those who volunteered to serve on the Landscape Committee. We look forward to your ideas for the community.

4. The Neighborhood Watch program is gathering momentum, check the Spring Ridge website for information on this community topic.

Swim Lesson Information

Group Lessons: Century Pool will be providing group swim lessons this spring and summer for the residents of Spring Ridge. The lessons will take place at the Spring Ridge pools. The fee is $55.00 per child, per group session. The child must be at least three (3) years old. There will be a total of nine (9) 30 minute lessons per session. Payment must be made by check or money order to Century Pools. Private Lessons: Private lessons will also be offered at a fee of $25.00 per half hour lesson (one child per private lesson). Payment for private lessons must be made by check to Century Pools or by exact cash only. For additional information, please contact Paul Lively with Century Pools at 301-798-0077 ext. 11 or stop by the Visitor Center to obtain an information packet. Thank you.

Phase I, slated for a new playground

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the playground will be replaced in the phase I pool area. This is the playground near the tennis courts and the swimming pools. It is the oldest playground on the property and because of its age and due to some recent vandalism, the playground needs to be replaced. Playground Specialist, Inc. has been awarded the contract and will do the installation. The plan is to have the old one removed and the new one installed by mid June.

Thank you for your patience to those of you who have not been able to use the yellow slide at this location. We think you will like the new playground and it will be designed to accommodate multiple age groups and is a good quality set.

Warning! Snakes have been seen!

It has been reported to management that a few homeowners have seen what they believe to be Copperhead Snakes. Management has not be able to verify this but it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry. Please know what to look for and what Copperheads look like. Copperhead snakes are to be avoided. The following information was provided by the MD Department of Wildlife. Northern Copperhead Snakes are one of two venomous snakes in Maryland. The head of a venomous snake is much wider than their body. The coloring of a Northern Copperhead is reddish brown with dark hourglass markings down their backs. Their head is usually a bright copper color and their belly is a pinkish color. If anyone sees what they believe is a Northern Copperhead Snake, immediately and slowly step away from the snake. If anyone is bitten by a snake, contact your physician and/or go to the nearest hospital immediately. For more information on Snakes you can go to www.dnr.state.md.us or call the Department of Wildlife at 301-842-2702. Thank you.

Annual ACC Inspections

Spring is upon us and Management has begun the annual ACC inspection. The Covenants allow Management or the Board to perform on site property inspections. Richard and/or Bill will be out on the property noting any changes homeowners have made to their property, both in front and rear yards. Afterwards, we will be verifying that applications were submitted and structures were built as applied for. The only exception to this is in the case of storm doors that meet the requirements set forth in your documents. The Board has decided to allow storm doors to be installed without applying, if they conform to the current guidelines. If you have any other changes that have been made, but forgot to submit an application, please take the time to do so now. We will be requesting applications for any changes that currently do not have one. Visit the Spring Ridge website at www.springridgeonline.com or stop by the Visitor Center for an application. The ACC meets on the second Wednesday of every month and the deadline for application submission is the Friday prior to the meeting. If you see one of us on your property, please keep in mind that we are there to perform this inspection. This walk through will bring the ACC up to snuff, increase your property values, and in general, make your community a better place to live. Thank you for your cooperation.

In an effort to ease the ACC process a bit, the Board of Directors is pleased to announce an easier way to apply for a storm door.

Fill out a simple application and if it satisfies the guidelines, then your installation can be approved right on the spot. Short, quick and easy. June Pool Committee News

The following Spring Ridge Residents are this year’s Pool Committee members: Tom Courtney, Bonnie High, Donna Keys, Karen Logue, Roz Mansouri, Kathy Sheehy, and Jonette Stupke. Century Pools, our pool managing company work closely with the committee to ensure an enjoyable and safe environment for all who enter our gates.

Please take a moment and welcome our new Pool Manager, Justin McConnaughy. He teaches during the non-summer months for Frederick County Public Schools. The Pool Committee and Justin have been working together and look forward to a happy and safe pool year.

Enclosed with this newsletter is a June calendar for pool events.

The Verizon “Talkabout” two way pager will be available once again this pool season for our hearing impaired patrons. If you wish to use it, please see the pool manager for the phone number and details.

A Reminder - Search your home for your permanent pool passes (those who lived here last year). If you lost them you can get a duplicate at the Visitor’s Center for a charge of $5.00 each.

Swimming Tests - Century Pools will keep index cards on file for every child under the age of 16 to ensure their safety at the pool. The information on the cards will tell whether or not the child passed the mandatory swim test. The two part test includes 1) Swimming the length of the lap pool and 2) Treading water for one minute.

If the child passes the test, he/she will receive a bracelet which MUST be worn at all times at the pool. They will be considered swimmers and may swim anywhere they’d like, and may jump or dive off the diving board.

Children who don’t pass the test can retake it as often as they like within reason. If a swimmer loses the bracelet, a replacement can be bought for 25 cents.

Note: Any of the guards or the Pool Manager can administer the test, EXCEPT if a child is under the age of two (2), in which case, the Pool Manager must do the testing.

Tip - All ages should rest for twenty (20) minutes after eating to prevent any stomach cramping and vomiting.

Swim Aids - Only approved Swim Aids will be allowed for toddlers, and they will be displayed at the guard office.

Community Pool Party - July 31st is the big day for it!! Soundsations D.J.’s have been hired for the musical part of the big event. Delicious plans are in the works!! We’ll keep in touch.

Look for information on “Water Aerobics” soon. Check the Pool Bulletin Board for more details.

Sharkey, our Pool Etiquette Mascot, once again reminds you to be aware of the following rules for good citizenship:

1. Please, no glass containers allowed.
2. Please clean off your table when you are finished.
3. Use trash cans available at the pool for spilled items.
4. Pleas be considerate of the lifeguards.
5. Do Not block the pool steps.
6. During peak hours, avoid putting your towels and possessions on empty lounge chairs.

Please join us at the next Pool Committee Meeting on Tuesday, June 8, 2004.

Spring Ridge Sharks News

The Sharks had a very successful registration session at the Visitors Center on Sunday, May 23rd. We welcomed many of our returning swimmers; we were also very excited to welcome many new/first time swimmers to the team. If you were unable to attend the in-person registration, you still have time to sign up and we would love to have you join the team. The registration period will be open until June 9th, 2004. It’s easy to sign up! Just stop by the Visitors Center and pick up a Registration Packet. To join the Spring Ridge Sharks Swim Team, simply complete the Registration Form and the Volunteer Form (both must be turned in at the same time); attach your check ($60/swimmer), place everything in a sealed envelope, and you’re all set! Forms may be dropped of at the Visitors Center until June 9th. After hours the night slot is available. So please hurry, don’t be late! No registrations will be accepted after the close of the June 9th deadline. All registrations will be handled through the Visitor’s Center. They have all the forms inside plus the calendar of events, schedules and the swim team handbook.

The success of the Sharks Swim Team is dependent on parent participation. That is why it is necessary for all parents to volunteer for meet positions. You’ll only be required to volunteer for the first or second half of a meet, NOT the entire meet, and the positions can be a lot of fun! You may not get your first choice but you will be assigned a position. We are still in great need of Stroke and Turn Judges. Certification/training is free and consists of a short clinic (only 2 hours). The last two (2) free clinics are offered at the YMCA are on June 2nd and 9th. Please email our Volunteer Coordinator, Shani Roeder for details at theroeders@msn.com .

The first day of practice is June 1st in the evening. There will be evening practices until school is over. The first home meet is Saturday, June 26th. Hope to see you there!
