Spring Ridge Review Newsletter
March 2007

Board of Director’s Corner
Meeting: March 20th - 7pm at VC

The Board reminds residents that you need to clear sidewalks in front of your homes by 24 hours after the snow has ended.  While last week’s weather events made this particularly challenging, we encourage all residents to keep their sidewalks clear.

The Board has selected High Sierra Pool Management Company as the pool management company for the 2007 season, after reviewing bids and interviewing the top five companies in the region.  Many factors went into this decision to switch from Century Pool, which has provided good service to the Spring Ridge Community for the past four years.  We hope to have a smooth transition to High Sierra and provide more amenities during the pool season.

The Board thanks those residents who completed the Pool Evaluation/Survey.  We are working to address your issues, specifically with regards to providing food service pool side.

Daylight Saving Time Begins Early!

On August 8, 2005, President George W. Bush signed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This Act changed the time change dates for Daylight Saving Time in the U.S.  Daylight Saving Time will begin on Sunday, March 11th for 2007.  Please remember to set your clocks one (1) hour ahead the night before, on Saturday, March 10th.  Also, check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to see that they are working properly, and if needed, install new batteries in them.

From the Spring Ridge Conservancy Board President:

Hello Neighbors, What an interesting winter it has been. At first I was not sure if winter would come at all. Then, winter let us all know it has finally arrived with several inches of snow and ice.

Please remember that it is your responsibility to clear the sidewalks if you live in a single family home. Condo owner’s sidewalks should be done by the snow removal contractor. Town homes however have a mixture of common and non-common sidewalks, so we are seeking clarity from our association attorney as to what the owners should do versus the association.

Along with winter and snow have come complaints to the Board of Directors. Some folks complained that the road snow and ice clearing happened too slowly, after the piled up snow froze solid. Other neighbors complained that they had just finished shoveling their driveways or car when the county snow plows pushed a pile of solid snow pack in their way. Well, I sympathize, but the HOA does not control the county snow plows. I’m sure they are trying their best to keep the main roads as safe as possible. As you all know, the February storm was very unusual . We still need to do our best to clear our sidewalks within 24 of the snow stopping. If one of your neighbors is unable to do so, then please lend a helping hand. If someone forgets, then a gentle reminder might be all it takes. Drive safely, walk safely, and enjoy the winter while it lasts.

Jerry Alexandratos
President

Yard Waste Recycling Starts In April

For Single Family and Town Homes:

Yard waste and grass clippings pickup will occur on Wednesdays from April through November onlyPlease note that this service ends promptly on the last Wednesday in November.  Grass and other yard clippings can be placed in paper bags, kraft bags, or loose in uncontaminated containers.  The trash hauler will not take grass/yard waste in plastic bags.  No sod will be allowed.  4 inch diameter branches may be bundled with cord and recycled as well, as long as the bundle does not exceed 4 feet in length.

East Frederick Little League

The deadline to sign up for the East Frederick Little League is Saturday, March 3rd at 9:30am at the Oakdale Recreation Center.  This is also tryout day, so bring a glove.  Please visit our website at www.eteamz.com.

Common Area Dumping

It’s no secret that some of the residents of Spring Ridge routinely dump their unwanted yard waste on common property. Whether it be Spring Ridge common property or an adjacent property or even in the wooded areas of Spring Ridge, this is something that should not take place. Your HOA dues pay for this service through the trash hauling contractor, Ecology Services, so why not take advantage of it. Yard waste pick up runs from April through November each year.  Management will take a more aggressive role this year in finding and imposing a fine on the violators who dump their waste in the common areas of the property. If you think about it, how would you feel if your neighbor decided to mow their lawn and throw all of their grass clippings and pruned branches on your front lawn? You would naturally be outraged!  Please take advantage of the Wednesday yard waste removal program. It works and you are paying for it. Should you have any questions about the program please contact the Management Office at 301-620-0782. Thank you.

Sharks News

This month, we will select the Spring Ridge Sharks 2007 coaching staff, continue planning and scheduling, and reemphasize our call for volunteers for the season.

Registration will take place in May, with meets taking place across Frederick County on Saturday mornings throughout June and July.  If you’ve been involved in swim teams before, you are well aware that the season cannot be a success without volunteers.  Volunteers are needed before, during, and after every event, throughout the summer.  To see a detailed list of volunteer opportunities, please visit our Website.

If you have special talents, want more information about any particular opportunity, or have any ideas, please feel free to contact any of the committee members.  Participating in our community swim team can be a very rewarding experience for your entire family!

Continue to watch our Website for updates and more information.
We’re looking forward to the summer!

Pool Committee News

The Pool Committee was scheduled to meet in February after a winter hiatus.  However, we were forced to cancel when Frederick was hit with one of the worst ice storms in years.

Once again, the committee has seen its numbers dwindle.  We bid farewell to Dave Belak, who although only with us for a short time, contributed immeasurably.  Each member brings a special expertise and outlook to our committee and they are difficult to replace.  We are always looking for residents to step forward and contribute their talents.

The Board of Directors rewrote and voted in a new charter for the Pool Committee.  The effect of this change eliminates the Pool Committee from being involved in administrative functions and responsibilities (unless specifically requested by the Board) as they relate to working with the pool management company, reviewing and recommending changes to pool rules, submitting orders for pool furniture, etc.  Subsequently, the Pool Committee’s main function as assigned by the Board will be to focus on planning more community pool parties throughout the season.  Without more volunteers, it will be difficult to plan and run these parties.  To make this a reality, the Pool Committee needs you, the Spring Ridge resident and pool patron.

The Pool Committee website is currently being reviewed and an updated version for the 2007 pool season will be posted soon.

Please join us for the next Pool Committee Meeting on Tuesday, March 13th at 7pm in the Visitor Center.

Easter Egg Hunt

The annual Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for Saturday, March 31st, from 10am-12pm.  The rain date is set for Sunday, April 1st, from 1pm-3pm.  For those of you who have never attended this event, there is an Easter Egg Hunt, a craft for the children and refreshments as well.  The Easter Bunny will also be available for pictures, so don't forget to bring your camera!  If you are planning to attend, please drop off one dozen empty plastic eggs per child, along with the completed registration form attached below, to the Visitor Center by Thursday, March 29th.  Thank you for your help!

Neighborhood Watch News

Since taking over the position of Neighborhood Watch Chairperson in 2005, I have been operating on a list of Block Captains, which was compiled by the previous Neighborhood Watch Committee.  I would like to update this list to weed out anyone who may have moved or no longer wishes to be a Block Captain.  So, this month, I am reinventing the list and looking for some volunteers to serve the Neighborhood Watch as Block Captains.  IT is by no means an overwhelming job and provides a great service in spreading news to keep your friends and family in the community safe and informed.  That said, let me explain what a Block Captain does.

The Block Captain is the primary link to the Neighborhood Watch chain of information.  The duties include a wide range of simple tasks:

  • Meet each resident in your assigned area and offer to register them in the Watch.
  • Maintain an emergency phone list of all your assigned residents.
  • Be available to pass on information about criminal activities in your area (Notice: You may be called late at night if one of your residents spots suspicious activities.).
  • Forward information to the Neighborhood Watch Chairperson and activate the phone tree if you receive information on a suspect in your area (The “phone tree” involves calling members and informing them if there is an active incident going on in the area.).
  • The Block Captain also assists in coordinating assistance programs if there are any special needs in their area and assist in setting up social events for their members to become involved in.

I am going to need Block Captain volunteers for each street in the community.  Larger streets will need to set up two or three Captains.  The majority of the communications are conducted online via email so I ensure you your personal life and family time will not be impacted by this duty.  I would also like to reiterate, this is a volunteer position, and you may choose to back out at any time.  If you are interested in volunteering to help out your community, please drop me an email at scout1412@yahoo.com with your name, address, and home phone number.  Your assistance and dedication in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Clay Townshend
Chairperson, Neighborhood Watch

Spring Ridge FAN Club News

Our March 21st FAN social is a mystery no longer.  March Madness refers not only to a popular sporting event, but to your gardening here in Spring Ridge.  A master gardener, Donna Dorr, will share her knowledge with us at the Visitor Center on that date at 7pm.  She has extensive experience with plants and will advise us about our early plantings.

Mimi Mack and Carole Heine, our February speakers proved to be bright and efficient entrepreneurial young women.  They are in a relatively new business that involves organizing your home and life space by decluttering.  Their business is named Clutter Consultants, LLC.  We were happy to see so many new residents of Spring Ridge show up for this event.  They do important work and shared with us their insights and experiences about the need to have our space orderly.  In some cases our safety and well-being are at stake.  For information about their services, call Carole at 301-788-4393 or Mimi at 301-748-6844

We are still collecting both hard cover and paper-back books at the Visitor Center for our April 18th Book Sale.  It is being sponsored by the FAN’S Book Group, and proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Literacy Council of Frederick County.

Linda Alexander, the nationally renowned author will be the speaker for our April 18th social and book sale at 7pm at the Visitor Center.  To add to what was written about her in the February Spring Ridge Review:

Linda’s newest book, Friendly Witness:  Robert Taylor, Hollywood and Communism, is a biography on Hollywood’s Golden Era star.  He was involved in the 1940’s hysteria over Communism and was branded the ultra-conservative that “named names.”

Linda has also freelanced for  the magazine Soap Opera Update.  It would be a great idea, before attending the April social to visit Linda’s webwebsites:http://www.lindajalexander.net and http://www.authorsden.com/lindajalexander.  For any additional information about this, contact Anna Walters, Book Group Chair at 301-624-4350.
